What Is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent makeup is a cosmetic tattooing technique that implants pigment under the skin to recreate the look of makeup — enhancing your natural features with results that last for years. Whether you want fuller, more defined brows, a subtle eyeliner that saves you time every morning, or a lip blush to restore shape and colour, every treatment is designed around you.

Your treatment begins with a thorough consultation. Together we map out your design, select a pigment shade from the professional Permablend and Tina Davies Permablend collections, and only proceed once you’re completely happy with the plan. You’re in full control at every stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A question that clients often ask is, “How long will permanent makeup brows last for the amount of money they’re spending?” There’s both a short and long answer to this, as with most questions. The short answer: about 2-3 years, with a recommended colour boost every 12-18 months. The long answer is that longevity depends on several factors that vary from client to client. Our skin characteristics differ greatly, and the placement of pigment impacts how long brows last. Unlike body art tattoos, permanent makeup artists use different pigments and place them more superficially, just beneath the skin’s surface in the dermal layer. Over time, the body gradually breaks down the pigment, shedding it through dead skin cells. Factors affecting how long the colour lasts are extensive: typically, oily skin loses colour sooner; medications, sun exposure, exfoliants, skincare routines, retinol use, skin hydration, genetics, skin tone, and pigment colour choice all play a role. Unfortunately, there isn’t a universal time frame, but on average, brows retain their colour for about a year before needing a boost. For some clients, this may be as short as 9 months or as long as 18-24 months.

For some clients, this may be as short as 9 months or as long as 18-24 months.

My quick-fire answer is: No! Pain perception varies from person to person. Some clients may even find the gentle hum of the machine soothing enough to fall asleep, while others might experience some discomfort. However, most clients report that plucking brow hairs is actually more painful than the procedure itself. Additionally, a topical anaesthetic is offered for all treatments to help minimise any discomfort.

Colour is always an important decision for everyone. Your technician will assess your skin tone and natural colouring to select a range of suitable shades. Before your treatment begins, a colour will be chosen that best complements your skin tone, hair colour, and brow hairs.

As many of my clients would agree, I generally start with a lighter tone for the first treatment, which allows us the option to darken the colour once it’s healed. Freshly tattooed brow pigments tend to appear brighter and warmer, softening as they heal. You can always choose to darken your permanent makeup later, but lightening is a whole different process and one that’s not as easily achieved.

Now, this is a serious concern for everyone.

If you have an ample amount of brow hair, it’s easier to determine the natural brow shape. However, if you have very little to no brow hair, it’s more like re-creating an entirely new brow.

Technicians use brow mapping, utilising points on the nose and eyes to determine where your brows should start, arch, and end. The brow bone and overall face structure guide the height and thickness of the design.

You always have a say in the final look—if you’re not satisfied with the mapped brow shape, you can make adjustments.
Before any needles touch your skin, all permanent makeup is first drawn with a pencil, allowing your technician to take the time and precision needed to create a well-proportioned template.

It’s always advised to stay close to your natural brow shape; permanent makeup should aim to look as natural as possible, suitable for all times of day and night.

Only once the technician and client are happy with the design will the treatment begin.

Sometimes two treatments are needed to complete your permanent makeup—this depends entirely on the healed results after the first treatment and adherence to post-treatment aftercare, and it isn’t always necessary. The second appointment allows for any adjustments and perfects any irregularities.

It’s recommended to avoid coffee and alcohol for 24 hours before the treatment, as both can thin the blood. When there’s more blood present, it reduces the chances of a good healed result, as the blood can dilute the pigment and prevent it from settling well under the skin. Additionally, increased blood flow can lead to more clotting during the healing process, which may result in more pigment loss. Alcohol also sensitises the skin, making the treatment more painful.
